Milwaukee, WI - The Beavers stuck to the season script of scoring in bunches, which led them to a 7-2 Game 3 victory and a second straight Rock League Baseball championship. The Mudhens struck early with a 2-out RBI double in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Milwaukee's offense was quiet until the 3rd inning, when two walks and a single from Justin Barkhurst loaded the bases for Brett Youngbeck, who then shot a single to left to score two and take the lead. Rob Tschimperle made it 4-1 later in the inning with a 2-out 2-RBI double to center.
Josh Smith, who was making his first start on the mound since the last game of the regular season, was in control for most of the game and used his defense to get out of some jams. An inning-ending double play in the 4th eliminated one MudHen rally. The Hens rallied again in the 6th inning by putting the first two men on base. Smith struck out one, but allowed an RBI double down the right field line to make it 4-2. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, Tschimperle brought in Alex Rejniak out of the pen. Al got out of the jam unscathed, getting a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
The Beavers used the momentum in the bottom half of the 6th. Youngbeck knocked in Tyler Schoen, who reached on an error. Then Doug Martin smacked a 2-RBI single to CF to give MKE a 7-2 lead.
Rejniak was dominant the rest of the game. He allowed just 1 hit and struck out 4 in 3.2 innings. He started the top of the 9th with a strikeout, and ended the game with a strikeout before getting mobbed on the mound.
Josh Smith earned the win by throwing 5.1 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 3. Youngbeck had 3 RBIs and a run scored. Barkhurst was 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Garceau scored twice and continued his season-long 26 game hitting streak with a hit and 2 walks. Martin and Tschimperle had 2 RBIs. Justin Reminger, coming back from injury, walked twice in two at-bats and scored once.
The entire Beavers organization thank their friends/family/wives/girlfriends and fans for a great season and tremendous support. A great crowd showed up on a chilly Wednesday night at the Rock and we appreciated it. Next year...3-peat?
