West Bend, WI - The Beavers put up another good showing in this year's Wiscosin Amateur Baseball Classic, improving on last years record and coming up a play or two away from playing in Sunday's final four. After beating Rubicon 8-2 on Thursday, the Beavers took on the Irish at their impressive complex in Monches Saturday morning. Rejniak threw a shutout and home runs from Tim Garceau and Tyler Schoen guided MKE to a 6-0 win.
The West Allis Nationals, who also took care of the other pool players, awaited the Beavs that night to decide who went on to Sunday's semi-final round. The Nationals, a member of the Wisconsin State League, came into this game with an overall record fo 20-7 and started their ace, Jimmy Jungbauer. Milwaukee sent rookie Joey Hodkiewicz to the bump and both starters impressed with 7-inning complete games. A few defensive miscues, one on an 5-2-3 double play attempt, in the 5th handed the Nationals their go-ahead run and the Beavers couldnt push another across in the final 2 innings.
West Allis advanced as a #2 seed in the semi-final and claimed 2nd place after beating Plymouth and losing to the Pewaukee Muskies in the championship. Milwaukee outscored their pool 16-5 in the 3 games.
The Milwaukee Beavers would like to thank Jim, Craig and the whole West Bend/Monches staff for another great tournament as they persevered through some nasty weather to get all these games in. We look forward to getting that trophy next year!
The Beavers have 3 games remaining in the RLB season, all happening in 4 days starting this Friday vs. the Muskies, as they look to clinch their 3rd straight AL Division crown.
