BEAVERS 10 MERTON 8
On Saturday the Beavers kicked off the 2024 season with a trip to Merton to take on the Amvets. Trusted veteran Josh Smith took the bump and threw a couple scoreless before the Beavs started their first rally in the 3rd. Rookie infielder Elan Jimenez (Loras College) ripped a 2B to the right-center gap in his first Beavers at-bat and was moved to 3rd by Phil Reed. Justin Barkhurst knocked in the first run of the year with a shot up the middle to score Jimenez. A Merton error opened the door for 3 more as the Beavs took advantage to take a 4-0 lead. Milwaukee returned the favor giving up 2 unearned runs in the bottom of the inning but got those back in the 4th. Brady Schulze relieved in the 5th and was solid, but a few too many walks and errors let the Amvets chip away until rallying for 3 to tie the game at 8 in the bottom of the 8th. In the 9th, Zach Schneider singled, moved up to 2nd and rookie Ethan Muma (Briggs & Stratton College) knocked home the go-ahead run and then scored after a single by Barkhurst. Aiden Thomas (MATC) supplied a heavy dose of breaking balls to secure a 1-2-3 9th and a Beaver victory.
Schneider led the way offensively going 4-5 with 2 RBI's and a double. Barkhurst went 3-4 with 3 RBI's. Carlos Walta (Briggs & Stratton College) and Jimenez had 2 hits appiece and nine Beavers scored runs.
BEAVERS 4 BROOKFIELD BLUE SOX 3
The Beavers welcomed the Brookfield Blue Sox to historic Joecks Memorial Field on Sunday for the '24 Home Opener. The Sox got on the board right away against Milwaukee starter Judd Reminger with 2 runs, one via an error, but the Beavs got one back in the bottom of the 1st when Carlos Walta ripped a 1-out double scoring Zach Schneider. In the 2nd, Luke Sikorski and Reminger knocked in runs to take a 3-2 lead. Reminger took control of the game after that, silencing the Brookfield bats for 6 more innings. He also knocked in a big run with a 2-out double scoring Sikorski from first after getting hit, to take a 4-2 lead in the 4th. Jerome Pawlak (UW-Lacrosse) took the mound in the 8th and a pick-off error led to a Blue Sox run to make it 4-3. In the 9th, catcher Justin Pontow threw out the would-be tying run trying to steal second and Pawlak did the rest to earn the 2-inning save.
Reminger did it all, grabbing the win, going 7 innings, giving up 1 earned run, 6 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts while also knocking in 2 runs at the dish. Schneider was 1-3 with a run, walk, and an RBI as well. It's the first time the Beavers have started 2-0 since 2015.
The Beavers will take Memorial Day Weekend off before returning for 2 big home games on Friday night 5/31 (vs Sussex) and Sunday 6/2 (vs Menomonee Falls). See you at the ballpark! #GoBeavs
